OpenCV: calibration and image-space motion
OpenCV provides camera-calibration and feature-tracking functionality. Calibration estimates optical distortion and intrinsic parameters needed for analysis or compositing. A change in resolution, crop, lens or electronic correction may invalidate a previous calibration. Optical flow measures apparent movement between images; pixel displacement alone does not directly reveal the aircraft’s 3D velocity. Subject motion, camera motion and scene depth can all contribute. Treat the measured image quantity and the inferred physical quantity as different stages. Cover different image regions during calibration and validate with separate images. A small fitting error alone is insufficient; inspect straight lines and edge behavior outside the calibration set.
COLMAP: reconstruct from multiple views
COLMAP implements Structure-from-Motion and Multi-View Stereo. Multiple images support camera-pose and sparse-structure estimation, followed by denser reconstruction. That is neither a real-time flight controller nor an automatic guarantee of survey accuracy. Sky, reflective water, moving foliage, repeated windows and blurred frames can cause problems. More extracted video frames are not automatically better: choose useful overlap, viewpoint change and sharpness. Preserve awareness of regions that failed to reconstruct. A convincing model and validated dimensions are different deliverables. Do not interpret a reconstruction as real-world distance or altitude without establishing scale and coordinates. Record which parts are relative estimates and where external references were introduced.
Use analysis to improve the next shot
Our original exercise visualizes tracked features in recorded footage and compares abrupt turns, strong foreground flow and tracking loss with human observation. Then reconstruct a static subject from a separate image set and inspect accepted and rejected views. Good numerical results do not mean the intended subject reads clearly as a film image. Use analysis to improve framing or movement; do not silently promote it into a safety decision system. Connecting perception to real-aircraft control requires separate validation of latency, confidence, calibration and failure handling. Record preprocessing such as stabilization or cropping, which can change the image geometry. A polished delivery clip and imagery suitable for geometric estimation are different inputs.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Put it into practice.
- Do not interpret raw pixel displacement as meters per second.
- A reconstructed model is not completed surveying or safety verification.
