Separate the path from the target
Blender’s Follow Path constraint can move an object along a curve, while a tracking constraint can keep a camera aimed at a target. For aerial previs, separate camera position, target and focal length. This does not reproduce the aircraft’s complete physical behavior, but it helps test when the subject appears, how backgrounds overlap and where it leaves the frame. Start with simple boxes and planes. Establish the image and timing needed by the edit before spending time on photorealistic materials. Label assumed dimensions in the first model. A precise-looking 3D view can be mistaken for a survey; distinguish measured geometry from placeholders used to test composition.
Match framing and timing assumptions
Match sensor assumptions, focal length, aspect ratio and recording-mode framing to the real camera. Entering a full-frame-equivalent focal length where a physical focal length is expected can produce the wrong view. Evenly progressing along a path does not guarantee uniform screen motion; subject distance and foreground depth matter. Mark opening, reveal and closing times on the timeline and inspect rotation or roll flips. Keep visual smoothness separate from physical flyability: an attractive camera animation can still require an impossible or unsuitable aircraft maneuver. Shortening an animation increases required speed or acceleration for the same travel. Recheck the real platform’s constraints and revise distance or framing rather than treating retiming as a purely editorial change.
Translate previs into a shot brief
The original deliverable should be a shot brief: opening and closing frames, duration, field of view, target, foreground and alternatives, not just an animation path. Terrain, vegetation, people and wind will differ from the model. Update previs during location assessment rather than treating it as an authoritative site map or directly executable flight plan. An absent obstacle in a model is not evidence of real-world absence. The principal value is a shared visual reference for director, camera operator and pilot, allowing an unsuitable movement to be replaced while preserving the intended image. Include alternatives in the shot brief: an approved static viewpoint or ground shot may communicate the same information. Previs should improve decisions rather than create attachment to one maneuver.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Put it into practice.
- Do not send Blender coordinates to a flight API without validated transforms and units.
- A beautiful render is not evidence of operational feasibility.
