Separate the flying platform from the filming system

Holybro’s X500 V2 development kit is an example of an airframe-and-autopilot development platform, not a finished cinema system. Check which camera, gimbal, video link, recorder, power supply and radio-control components are included or must be added. Configurations and documentation can change, so use the bill of materials for the exact SKU. Matching mounting holes does not establish compatibility in mass, balance, power, vibration or cooling. Our original selection worksheet separates included parts, additional purchases and integration work, with distinct acceptance criteria for flight and filming. Include required replacement spares in the configuration list.

Perception cameras and production cameras

ModalAI’s Starling 2 is an example of a development platform documented for perception and flight-system work. Having onboard cameras does not establish that their output meets cinema or promotional delivery requirements. Perception emphasizes field of view, latency, synchronization and calibration; production also emphasizes color, optics, dynamic range and recording format. Compare sharing one camera against using separate perception and filming cameras. Separate devices add mass, power and alignment work. Diagram which sensor supports flight decisions and which creates delivery media before selecting a configuration. Check recording availability separately.

Integrating a compute platform such as Jetson

A Jetson developer kit supports development and testing on an embedded compute platform. The name does not mean it is an autopilot or an aviation-qualified finished system. Measure end-to-end latency from camera input through processing to result delivery, not just model inference speed. Power, cooling and mass can outweigh a headline compute figure. Moving from a bench kit to a module and carrier requires revalidation of interfaces, software versions, power, startup and failure behavior. Begin with recorded imagery, then simulation, ground integration and appropriately controlled hardware testing. Keep compute failures from disabling flight supervision.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Put it into practice.

Watch for these pitfalls
  • Do not treat a development kit as a production-ready filming system.
  • Do not confuse mounting compatibility with software, electrical and operational compatibility.
