Story before altitude
Turn an attractive aerial view into a sentence that advances the film.
KNOWLEDGE LIBRARY
The aerial filmmaking guide
Go as deep as you need. Search titles, headings and full chapter text.
Commercial films: show the promise
Connect the brand promise, visual evidence and delivery format in one production brief.
Travel and hobby: bring home one discovery
Make a short film around one observation rather than collecting landmark overviews.
Documentary: be accountable for distance
Separate what an aerial records from the interpretation created by editing.
Property and architecture: honest spatial context
Explain access, surroundings and use rather than simply making a building look imposing.
Sport: read motion before following it
Separate the athlete’s route from the aircraft’s route and build speed within the frame.
Reveal, push-in and pull-back
Design the moment information changes, rather than choosing a movement for its shape.
Orbit and parallax: make depth readable
Distinguish the meaning of circling a subject from the meaning of a changing background.
Top-down, tracking and editorial rhythm
Combine graphic overhead views with subject-led movement to build a varied sequence.
Forest: film layers, not just green
Combine canopy, edges, routes and ground details to make the forest readable.
Coast: work with the rhythm of water
Use horizon, wave rhythm and shoreline while planning for changing coastal conditions.
Urban geometry and everyday life
Build urban compositions around architecture, movement and light within real operating constraints.
Mountains: show scale through layers
Read ridgelines, foreground slopes and distant layers while planning around terrain and weather.
Night: choose light instead of erasing darkness
Balance twilight, layers of light and night-operation requirements.
Snow and sand: find cues within negative space
Separate bright surfaces, shadows, temperature and launch conditions in visually minimal landscapes.
The aerial viewpoint predates the drone
Use records from 1858, 1860 and 1927 to examine changes in viewpoint and storytelling.
Images that tell stories and records that measure
Use Earth-observation history to distinguish cinematic images from measurement records.
From flying camera to computational cinematography
Read primary records from 2013, 2014 and 2019 to understand integration and automation.
Understand the camera as a system
Follow the path from light to a recorded image before comparing megapixels.
Expose for the subject and the story
Separate clipped skies, noisy shadows and exposure changes.
Frame rate, exposure time and rolling shutter
Motion blur, playback cadence and geometric distortion are different problems.
ND, polarizers and protective filters
Filters modify incoming light; choose one for a specific optical problem.
Log, gamut and white balance
A flat-looking image is not automatically a better source.
Codecs, bit depth and storage
Choose settings that survive capture, editing and delivery.
Separate gimbal control from vibration
A level horizon does not mean every source of movement is controlled.
Pitch, roll, yaw and thrust
Connect stick commands to vehicle motion and the image.
Design smoothness with velocity, acceleration and jerk
Smooth starts and stops require more than a low speed.
Translate flight motion into visual meaning
Choose reveal, orbit, truck and top-down shots by purpose.
Use Spotlight, ActiveTrack and POI deliberately
Tracking capability is one part of a complete shot plan.
Check DJI app features against SDK support
A feature in the first-party app is not automatically exposed to your app.
Understand Autel and Parrot development platforms
Compare execution environments and verified interfaces, not just feature names.
Before building a filming platform with PX4
Separate the responsibilities of autopilot, airframe, camera and application.
Use ArduPilot waypoints and splines for filming
Read waypoint geometry, flown path and camera direction separately.
Distinguish MAVLink from MAVSDK
A communication protocol and a developer library are different layers.
Connect perception, framing and supervision with ROS 2
Modular processing still needs a clearly owned stop decision.
Read aerial imagery with OpenCV and COLMAP
Separate image motion, camera calibration and reconstructed geometry.
Previsualize aerial shots in Blender
Rehearse camera aim and timing before planning the real flight.
Finish aerial footage in DaVinci Resolve
Connect editing, color, stabilization, sound and delivery.
Choose airframe, perception and compute kits
A development kit can solve very different parts of the system.
For the other use of the same sky, looking after structures, see the structures drones inspect in the Inspection guide.
