Establish media interpretation first

Preserve originals and identify frame rate, resolution, gamut, gamma and available audio before editing. Blackmagic Design provides official training across editing, color, sound and delivery. Our suggested workflow is media interpretation, rough cut, shot selection, color and movement adjustments, sound, then delivery checks. If proxies are used, verify the sequence against the intended original media before approval. Share the input and output transform decisions. Independent, undocumented LUT choices make matching even one location unnecessarily difficult. Organize date, location, camera, selects and known problems at ingest. Clip notes make later editorial decisions reproducible without depending on one person’s memory.

Inspect stabilization and retiming side effects

Post stabilization may crop or warp the image, narrowing the field of view or creating unnatural edges and building shapes. More correction is not always better. Retiming and interpolation likewise need inspection around water, foliage and foreground occlusions. Start by choosing an appropriate take, then adjust only where needed. Watch at normal playback speed as well as frame by frame. A dramatic speed ramp should support the subject rather than obscure it. The aim is a readable scene, not a demonstration of the processor’s capabilities. Inspect stabilized shots in context. A crop may look fine alone but create an unintended scale jump at the cut. Compare the improvement with the framing margin lost.

Complete the work with sound and delivery checks

When usable location sound is unavailable from the aircraft, separately recorded ambience or appropriately licensed material may be needed. Avoid misleading the audience about real events when sound is presented as documentary evidence. Music can shape the start of a movement and the pause after it, rather than merely filling duration. Export the actual deliverable and watch it from beginning to end for missing frames, color shifts, audio interruptions, titles, aspect ratio and cadence. Keep a high-quality preservation master distinct from web delivery, and maintain a rights and source log. Finishing the export begins quality control; it does not complete it. Record which exact export was checked. After late changes, review the complete file rather than only the edited title or audio. Archive the project, required media, software version and rights information together.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Put it into practice.

Watch for these pitfalls
  • Do not approve delivery solely from the timeline preview.
  • Do not assume identical feature and codec availability across operating systems and editions.
